It all began…
Emily’s first interior design project was all pink and flowers.
Guess that’s what you’d expect from an eight year old. But
she clearly had a vision for her bedroom, and her mother let her make
it real. "My mother was always interested in interior design,"
says Emily. "We lived in old houses and she always knew how to make
them personal and beautiful. I’m sure some of that rubbed off on
me."
A long-time interest in the visual arts and a strong sense of family and
community led Emily to choose interior design as her career. Combining
artistic ability and working with the personal needs of clients was a
natural fit.
Tell me more…
Q: What kind of interior design
projects get you most excited?
A: You can never go wrong when you have
a fun loving client, no matter what the project. If I can find something
the client is passionate about, then I know I can create something that’s
special and interesting. And there’s something about the thrill
of the hunt and solving a variety of problems that’s energizing.
I remember a Victorian kitchen remodel we did recently.
The client was open to doing some very fun and different things, while
keeping the charm of the Victorian style. The husband and wife had very
different tastes. For instance, he liked stained woods, she liked painted.
But we were able to blend their preferences into a space that pleased
them both.
Q: If you weren’t
an interior designer, what else would you do?
A: Whatever it would be, it would have
to be something creative. Art teacher, graphic designer, advertising –
something where I could use my creativity in a visual way.
Q: Is your home just the way you
want it?
A: No. It’s constantly evolving.
One nice thing about this business is you learn to appreciate a lot of
different styles and tastes. But that makes it hard to choose what you
want in your own home.
Q: What is your favorite room in
your own home?
A: Strangely enough, my little red bathroom.
It’s bold and fun. It’s also tiny, but we did some fun things
with color, light fixtures and other touches. Now it definitely looks
like our bathroom and not someone else’s, and isn’t that the
point?
